Yes, as long as the course is at an eligible educational institution. The American Opportunity Credit requires a student be enrolled at least half time, but the Lifetime Learning Credit does not. For example, a student who has just graduated from high school and is taking a single course at a community college may claim the Lifetime Learning Credit if the student comes within the income limits and is not claimed as a dependent by someone else.The same holds true for a retiree taking a class.
